Contemporary street artist, FinDAC, blends East and West

Dark Angel, Deadly Dragon – A wall in West London

Irish born Street Artist FinDAC has created a wonderfully unique and bright style for his contemporary art. He began with street art, but has now extended into mix media in order to make an honest living. The artist, who lives and works in London, creates large murals of Geisha like women, inspired by the 19-century art movement Aestheticism.

Inspiration

FinDacs murals depict beautiful race ambiguous women, adorned with eye masks and asian inspired finery. The women he paints are real women that he has met on various occasions and are treated with pseudo ethnic accessories, contemporary decorative devices and splashes of bright primary colours. When commented on by an admirer “Your work is hauntingly beautiful and also melancholy. Are the images meant to project sadness?”; The artist responds “Not particularly… I think that’s up to the viewer”. This crucial bystanders interpretation is what makes the overall feel so attractive – Its is both beautiful but also proud and somewhat melancholy. The artist has certainly been a bit of a globetrotter, having created artwork all over the Isles, across Europe and the United States.

There is a definitive nod to the legacy of the British empire with LA ArtSeeker Lizy Dastin quoting ” “…When Fin Dac depicts Eastern bodies, he does so in a manner that disrupts the colonialist attitude rather than pandering to it through inappropriately sexual renderings.”
